Quilting for Warmth

My husband and I live on the high plains of eastern Colorado in a small community about 160 miles from Denver. We were experiencing particularly cold temperatures in November a few years ago and had heard on a Denver TV station that the Denver homeless shelters were pleading for coats and blankets. We own a coffee house and using it as a drop-off location, we quickly put in motion a blanket and coat drive advertising on the local radio station and in the once weekly newspaper. A group of women from a church in another small community about 15 miles northeast of us heard about the drive and quilted over 60 blankets - beautiful and warm and carefully quilted by their mostly 80+ year old hands. Every year since then, they call and ask how many we want. That year, in less than 10 days, piled to the ceiling, we received over 650 coats and over 350 blankets. For a small community so far from the perils of city life and homeless living, it was an amazing feat. We are truly amazed how quickly and easily we can help keep people warm.
