I Learned it From the Bruises

When I was younger I got into many fights, some lost others won. I went to a city school, the area wasn't the best or the wealthiest. Many nights I would go home and nurse my many bumps, scrapes, gnashes, and bruises. My best companion was a walkman that had a CD by Lil Wayne in it, which I would listen to as I applied ice or ran cold water over the wounds. His confidence inspired me, it made me feel better. It changed me, it rubbed off on me to the point that one day when a kid who had previously lost to me tried to outnumber me in a fight, I looked him in the eyes and said, "I've beaten you before, I can do it again." This must have startled the boy and his friends, they left without throwing a punch. That day marked a change in me, since then I committed to be me in what I write, believe, feel, think, say and do.

I'd say that it is confidence when you can take a breath in, and do what you think needs to be done as if you have done such a thing before, then release the breath.
